Building Bridges for Climate Action (BB4CA)

Build­ing Bridges for Cli­mate Action (BB4CA) rep­re­sents a start­ing point for a par­a­digm shift to strength­en the cli­mate move­ment around the world by bring­ing under­rep­re­sent­ed groups into the spot­light, 25 unique young cli­mate experts* from Latin Amer­i­ca and the Caribbean (LAC) came togeth­er for a five-week vir­tu­al pro­gramme in Novem­ber and Decem­ber 2020 to share their knowl­edge, sto­ries, expe­ri­ences and real­i­ties of the unfold­ing cli­mate cri­sis. They shared their con­cerns about the con­se­quences of cli­mate change and expressed the expect­ed impacts on young and future gen­er­a­tions. They explained their demands and dis­cussed their approach­es to cli­mate pro­tec­tion in polit­i­cal, eco­nom­ic, sci­en­tif­ic and civ­il con­texts in Ger­many. BB4CA was joint­ly organ­ised by young vol­un­teers from Latin Amer­i­ca, the Caribbean and Europe. The project was finan­cial­ly sup­port­ed by the Fed­er­al Min­istry for the Envi­ron­ment, Nature Con­ser­va­tion and Nuclear Safe­ty and legal­ly imple­ment­ed by the Ger­man youth NGO Kli­madel­e­ga­tion e.V. Clara and Lukas sail to the COP25

Two of our del­e­ga­tion mem­bers, Clara von Glasow and Lukas Kiefer, are cur­rent­ly in the mid­dle of the ocean: They are sail­ing with the project #Sail­tothe­COP with a three-mast schooner from Europe to Chile for the UN cli­mate con­fer­ence COP25. At the begin­ning of Octo­ber they start­ed their trip with 35 oth­er cli­mate activists in Ams­ter­dam. They not only want to save a lot of CO2 through their trip, but also devel­op new approach­es for the low-emis­sion and cli­mate-friend­ly trav­el of the future in a float­ing think tank. At the end of Novem­ber, Clara, Lukas, and the oth­ers will prob­a­bly reach the main­land again with their ship. The last 4000 kilo­me­tres to Chile will be cov­ered by bus. Delegates at the UN Climate Action Summit

At the end of Sep­tem­ber 2019, our del­e­ga­tion mem­ber Pia Jorks got the chance to trav­el to the UN Cli­mate Action Sum­mit in New York as a mem­ber of the Ger­man del­e­ga­tion. There, states pre­sent­ed how they intend to achieve their nation­al­ly deter­mined con­tri­bu­tions (NDCs) by 2020 and ulti­mate­ly net zero emis­sions by 2050. Pia was able to par­tic­i­pate as an observ­er in the large ple­nary ses­sion and met with the nego­tia­tors of the Ger­man del­e­ga­tion on the side­lines of the cli­mate sum­mit for a crit­i­cal exchange on how to pro­ceed in inter­na­tion­al cli­mate pol­i­cy. She also sat on a pan­el on #Allinfor­Cli­mate­Ac­tion. Togeth­er with the two youth del­e­gates for sus­tain­able devel­op­ment, she spoke with Fed­er­al Min­is­ter for the Envi­ron­ment Sven­ja Schulze about the cli­mate pack­age, the fur­ther steps to strength­en the NDC and, of course, about youth par­tic­i­pa­tion in polit­i­cal process­es and cli­mate nego­ti­a­tions. At the end of the meet­ing, the Min­is­ter signed the KwonGesh Cli­mate Pledge, a promise to involve youth in their cli­mate plan­ning and the imple­men­ta­tion of the Paris Agreement.

Campaign: All in for Climate Action

Peo­ple all over the world are cur­rent­ly call­ing on politi­cians to final­ly give every­thing for cli­mate pro­tec­tion. Var­i­ous youth organ­i­sa­tions in Ger­many are par­tic­i­pat­ing in the #Allinfor­Cli­mate­Ac­tion cam­paign. The peti­tion has already reached more than 700,000 peo­ple from over 40 coun­tries in Sep­tem­ber 2019. The peti­tion calls on world lead­ers to make the UN cli­mate sum­mit a his­toric turn­ing point. They are also demand­ed to pub­licly acknowl­edge the threat of cli­mate cat­a­stro­phe and strength­en their cli­mate action plans to keep glob­al warm­ing below 1.5°C. The appeal was deliv­ered to world lead­ers at the Cli­mate Action Sum­mit in New York on 23 Sep­tem­ber 2019. Ger­man sup­port­ers of the cam­paign include Rebec­ca Fre­itag, UN Youth Del­e­gates for Sus­tain­able Devel­op­ment, Kli­madel­e­ga­tion e.V., Fri­days for Future Ger­many, Young Friends of the Earth Ger­many, and Local Con­fer­ence of Youth (LCOY) Ger­many. Youth exchange at COP24 

At the UN Cli­mate Change Con­fer­ence in Katow­ice, Poland in 2018, we brought togeth­er young peo­ple from France, Poland, and Ger­many in a youth exchange. The par­tic­i­pants dis­cussed the inter­faces between spe­cif­ic glob­al sus­tain­able devel­op­ment goals (SDGs) and cli­mate change. In the Ger­man pavil­ion, the results and demands were then pre­sent­ed to the Fed­er­al Min­istry for Eco­nom­ic Coop­er­a­tion and Devel­op­ment (BMZ) and the Fed­er­al Min­istry for the Envi­ron­ment, Nature Con­ser­va­tion and Nuclear Safe­ty (BMU) as well as French and Pol­ish min­istry rep­re­sen­ta­tives. The event was so con­vinc­ing that the youth del­e­gates Lara Schech (Kli­madel­e­ga­tion e.V.) and Klau­dia Klonows­ka (Pol­ish UN youth del­e­gates) were able to accom­pa­ny their coun­try rep­re­sen­ta­tives to the High Lev­el Talanoa Dia­logue on the next day.

Conference of Youth COY13

The 13th Con­fer­ence of Youth (COY13) wel­comed more than 1,000 par­tic­i­pants to Bonn in Novem­ber 2017 in the run-up to the Unit­ed Nations Cli­mate Change Con­fer­ence (COP23). Inter­na­tion­al and region­al youth NGOs met civ­il soci­ety actors and inter­est­ed young peo­ple from 114 coun­tries to dis­cuss cli­mate change in a pro­gramme of more than 225 indi­vid­ual events under the mot­to “Talanoa Mada — Youth Accel­er­at­ing Cli­mate Action”. Open letter to Federal Minister Peter Altmaier 

In a broad alliance, we turned to Fed­er­al Min­is­ter for Eco­nom­ic Affairs Peter Alt­maier in 2018. We called for youth par­tic­i­pa­tion in the Com­mis­sion on Growth, Struc­tur­al Change and Employ­ment (“Coal Com­mis­sion”). Our clear mes­sage: Pol­i­tics must not decide on the future of young peo­ple with­out involv­ing them in the dis­cus­sion! The let­ter was signed by Kli­madel­e­ga­tion e.V., WWF Jugend, Naturfre­un­de­ju­gend, Net­zw­erk N and JANUN Lüneb­urg e.V.. We were sup­port­ed by more than 20 orga­ni­za­tions and sev­en indi­vid­u­als, among them the social sci­en­tist and youth researcher Pro­fes­sor Dr. Klaus Hurrelmann.

Youth exchange #GerFiji

In 2017, the 23rd UN Cli­mate Change Con­fer­ence (COP23) took place in Ger­many under the pres­i­den­cy of the Fiji Islands. In this con­text, the Foun­da­tion for the Rights of Future Gen­er­a­tions und Kli­madel­e­ga­tion e.V., togeth­er with the Fijian Project Sur­vival Pacif­ic organ­ised a youth exchange with finan­cial sup­port from the Ger­man Fed­er­al Envi­ron­ment Min­istry. 15 Ger­man and 15 Fijian young peo­ple had the oppor­tu­ni­ty to exchange ideas, learn about nation­al mea­sures in the field of cli­mate, and marine pro­tec­tion as well as meet with gov­ern­men­tal rep­re­sen­ta­tives and inter­na­tion­al organ­i­sa­tions. The del­e­ga­tion from Fiji trav­elled to Ger­many at the end of 2017 and took part in the 13th Con­fer­ence of Youth and COP23.

Climate classroom 

In 2019, we devel­oped the “Cli­mate Class­room” project to edu­cate young peo­ple about the effects of cli­mate change. We vis­it school class­es and events with the aim of demon­strat­ing the process­es of inter­na­tion­al cli­mate pol­i­cy. We also want to moti­vate young peo­ple to get involved in cli­mate pol­i­cy. To approach this in a play­ful way, we offer the oppor­tu­ni­ty to con­duct a sim­u­la­tion game of the cli­mate con­fer­ence fol­lowed by an intro­duc­tion to cli­mate pol­i­cy. The par­tic­i­pants slip into the role of coun­try del­e­ga­tions and joint­ly aim to achieve the goals of the Paris Agree­ment. Are you inter­est­ed in such a work­shop? European Election Campaign 2019

For the Euro­pean elec­tions 2019, we launched a cam­paign to draw atten­tion to the sig­nif­i­cance of the elec­tion for cli­mate pol­i­cy and, above all, to encour­age young peo­ple to cast their votes. We pub­lished inter­views with cit­i­zens and can­di­dates for the Euro­pean Par­lia­ment in which they shared per­son­al sto­ries and opin­ions on Euro­pean cli­mate pol­i­cy. We also com­pared par­ty pro­grammes, explained how postal vot­ing works and called peo­ple to vote with a video.

#Klimakurzerklärt

Under the name #kli­makurz­erk­lärt we pub­lished a mini-series on Youtube. This way, we shed light on the thick­et of abbre­vi­a­tions used in the UN cli­mate nego­ti­a­tions and explained, for exam­ple, the UNFCCC. Detailed expla­na­tions were also giv­en on the Paris Agree­ment and the ambi­tion mech­a­nism with nation­al cli­mate change con­tri­bu­tions, glob­al stock­tak­ing, and Talanoa dia­logue. A glos­sary in video format!
