Klimadelegation presents Core Demands for COP26

The COP26 in Glasgow will set the decisive course for climate policy in this decade. Not least, the latest IPCC report has shown how urgent it is for all political actors to take consistent action in the fight against global warming. The voices of young delegates can’t be ignored again.
Members of the climate delegation presented and discussed demands for the climate conference in Glasgow in a panel discussion on Wednesday, 13 October 2021 at 5 pm. We then discussed the social responsibility of industrialized countries in the climate issue, but also the central building blocks of the climate negotiations such as national NDCs, climate impact adaptation or climate financing with guests from climate politics and society.

Please find our position paper in english as a full version, the short version of our demands and our core demands for policy makers.

Building Bridges for Climate Action (BB4CA)

Building Bridges for Climate Action (BB4CA) represents a starting point for a paradigm shift to strengthen the climate movement around the world by bringing underrepresented groups into the spotlight, 25 unique young climate experts* from Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) came together for a five-week virtual programme in November and December 2020 to share their knowledge, stories, experiences and realities of the unfolding climate crisis. They shared their concerns about the consequences of climate change and expressed the expected impacts on young and future generations. They explained their demands and discussed their approaches to climate protection in political, economic, scientific and civil contexts in Germany. BB4CA was jointly organised by young volunteers from Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe. The project was financially supported by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety and legally implemented by the German youth NGO Klimadelegation e.V. You can find more on BB4CA here.

Clara and Lukas sail to the COP25

Two of our delegation members, Clara von Glasow and Lukas Kiefer, are currently in the middle of the ocean: They are sailing with the project #SailtotheCOP with a three-mast schooner from Europe to Chile for the UN climate conference COP25. At the beginning of October they started their trip with 35 other climate activists in Amsterdam. They not only want to save a lot of CO2 through their trip, but also develop new approaches for the low-emission and climate-friendly travel of the future in a floating think tank. At the end of November, Clara, Lukas, and the others will probably reach the mainland again with their ship. The last 4000 kilometres to Chile will be covered by bus. Much current information to the journey gives it on the Social Media channels of climatic delegation registered association or under sailtothecop.com.

Delegates at the UN Climate Action Summit

At the end of September 2019, our delegation member Pia Jorks got the chance to travel to the UN Climate Action Summit in New York as a member of the German delegation. There, states presented how they intend to achieve their nationally determined contributions (NDCs) by 2020 and ultimately net zero emissions by 2050. Pia was able to participate as an observer in the large plenary session and met with the negotiators of the German delegation on the sidelines of the climate summit for a critical exchange on how to proceed in international climate policy. She also sat on a panel on #AllinforClimateAction. Together with the two youth delegates for sustainable development, she spoke with Federal Minister for the Environment Svenja Schulze about the climate package, the further steps to strengthen the NDC and, of course, about youth participation in political processes and climate negotiations. At the end of the meeting, the Minister signed the KwonGesh Climate Pledge, a promise to involve youth in their climate planning and the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

Campaign: All in for Climate Action

People all over the world are currently calling on politicians to finally give everything for climate protection. Various youth organisations in Germany are participating in the #AllinforClimateAction campaign. The petition has already reached more than 700,000 people from over 40 countries in September 2019. The petition calls on world leaders to make the UN climate summit a historic turning point. They are also demanded to publicly acknowledge the threat of climate catastrophe and strengthen their climate action plans to keep global warming below 1.5°C. The appeal was delivered to world leaders at the Climate Action Summit in New York on 23 September 2019. German supporters of the campaign include Rebecca Freitag, UN Youth Delegates for Sustainable Development, Klimadelegation e.V., Fridays for Future Germany, Young Friends of the Earth Germany, and Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) Germany. You can sign the petition here.

Youth exchange at COP24

At the UN Climate Change Conference in Katowice, Poland in 2018, we brought together young people from France, Poland, and Germany in a youth exchange. The participants discussed the interfaces between specific global sustainable development goals (SDGs) and climate change. In the German pavilion, the results and demands were then presented to the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) as well as French and Polish ministry representatives. The event was so convincing that the youth delegates Lara Schech (Klimadelegation e.V.) and Klaudia Klonowska (Polish UN youth delegates) were able to accompany their country representatives to the High Level Talanoa Dialogue on the next day.

Conference of Youth COY13

Group photo of the COY13

The 13th Conference of Youth (COY13) welcomed more than 1,000 participants to Bonn in November 2017 in the run-up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP23). International and regional youth NGOs met civil society actors and interested young people from 114 countries to discuss climate change in a programme of more than 225 individual events under the motto “Talanoa Mada — Youth Accelerating Climate Action”. More information about the project can be found here.

Open letter to Federal Minister Peter Altmaier

In a broad alliance, we turned to Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Peter Altmaier in 2018. We called for youth participation in the Commission on Growth, Structural Change and Employment (“Coal Commission”). Our clear message: Politics must not decide on the future of young people without involving them in the discussion! The letter was signed by Klimadelegation e.V., WWF Jugend, Naturfreundejugend, Netzwerk N and JANUN Lüneburg e.V.. We were supported by more than 20 organizations and seven individuals, among them the social scientist and youth researcher Professor Dr. Klaus Hurrelmann.

Youth exchange #GerFiji

In 2017, the 23rd UN Climate Change Conference (COP23) took place in Germany under the presidency of the Fiji Islands. In this context, the Foundation for the Rights of Future Generations und Klimadelegation e.V., together with the Fijian Project Survival Pacific organised a youth exchange with financial support from the German Federal Environment Ministry. 15 German and 15 Fijian young people had the opportunity to exchange ideas, learn about national measures in the field of climate, and marine protection as well as meet with governmental representatives and international organisations. The delegation from Fiji travelled to Germany at the end of 2017 and took part in the 13th Conference of Youth and COP23

Climate classroom

In 2019, we developed the “Climate Classroom” project to educate young people about the effects of climate change. We visit school classes and events with the aim of demonstrating the processes of international climate policy. We also want to motivate young people to get involved in climate policy. To approach this in a playful way, we offer the opportunity to conduct a simulation game of the climate conference followed by an introduction to climate policy. The participants slip into the role of country delegations and jointly aim to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. Are you interested in such a workshop? Then contact us and we will come by!

European Election Campaign 2019

For the European elections 2019, we launched a campaign to draw attention to the significance of the election for climate policy and, above all, to encourage young people to cast their votes. We published interviews with citizens and candidates for the European Parliament in which they shared personal stories and opinions on European climate policy. We also compared party programmes, explained how postal voting works and called people to vote with a video.

#Klimakurzerklärt

Under the name #klimakurzerklärt we published a mini-series on Youtube. This way, we shed light on the thicket of abbreviations used in the UN climate negotiations and explained, for example, the UNFCCC. Detailed explanations were also given on the Paris Agreement and the ambition mechanism with national climate change contributions, global stocktaking, and Talanoa dialogue. A glossary in video format!
